Ethereum Name Services (ENS) Gaseless DNSSEC and the .AM country code top level domains (ccTLD)

In January 2024, a groundbreaking development emerged from Ethereum Name Service (ENS) with the introduction of Gasless DNSSEC. This innovative launch signifies a pivotal moment in the integration of traditional Domain Name Service (DNS) with the evolving Web3 landscape facilitated by ENS. Essentially, Gasless DNSSEC bridges the gap between Web2 and Web3, enabling seamless interaction and evolution across domain protocols.

February of 2024 we connect the first know .AM ccTLD to use the Gasless DNSSEC offchain method for ENS was “armeniadomains.am”. We reported this achievement to ISOC.am, the registry of the .AM and the .հայ (.hay) extension.

This advancement marks a significant leap forward for the .AM ccTLD capacity to thrive in Web3, is primarily attributable to the integration of ENS. This pivotal development underscores the ENS platform’s enhanced capabilities, propelling it into the forefront of decentralized web infrastructure, poised to revolutionize digital landscapes and empower users with unprecedented opportunities for innovation and growth with the .AM ccTLD.

What is Gasless DNSSEC and Offchain ENS?

Gasless DNSSEC empowers users to engage with Web3 applications using familiar domain names instead of a long hexadecimal Ethereum address. This parallels the transition from Web1’s reliance on IP addresses to Web2’s adoption of user-friendly domain names. For instance, the International Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) was previously identified solely by its IP address, “192.0.43.7.” The evolution from cryptic IP addresses to readable domain names illustrates the transformative role of DNS, explained in ICANN’s article “The Domain Name System.”

A smart contract created by Nick Johnson, who is the Founder/ Lead Developer of ENS, is known as CCIP Read (EIP-3668) powers the ENS system to verify the DNS to ENS connection through an offchain gateway. This eliminated users from having to pay costly Ethereum gas transactions known as Gwei, the term given as the denomination of Ethereum gas fees.
The onchain DNS to ENS configuration however requires a gas fee for putting a DNS name on the Ethereum network through ENS.

Why is the use of ENS with .AM ccTLD Important?

The .AM country code top-level domain (ccTLD) aligns with ENS requirements due to its DNSSEC compliance. This integration not only ensures enhanced security but also facilitates seamless interaction within the Web3 ecosystem. By leveraging the .AM ccTLD, users gain expanded functionalities, unlocking new possibilities and contributing to the progressive evolution of online capabilities within the decentralized landscape.

Setting Up a .AM ccTLD to the Offchain ENS.

To connect your .AM domain with the Offchain Gasless DNSSEC of ENS you will need a few things.

Step 1

Purchase a .AM ccTLD from a Registrar supporting the .AM ccTLD.

Some popular local Armenian Registrars and popular international platforms.

  • GlobalR
  • Regnest.am
  • Reg.am
  • ABC Domain
  • GoDaddy.com (The .am registration is much higher than local but has ENS integrated with their platform.)
  • 101domain.com

You can find a more expanded list on our Registrars Page.

Step 2

Create an Ethereum Wallet.

These are the most popular platforms listed by ENS, that provide Ethereum wallets to create your Ethereum address to the ENS.

  • LedgerLive
  • Wallet Connect
  • Rainbow
  • Coinbase Wallet
  • MetaMask
  • Argent

Of course, these are not the only platforms to create an Ethereum wallet and some platforms will require a cold wallet.  Do your own research and find what platform is best for you.

Step 3

Enable DNSSEC

Contact your registrar to enable DNSSEC settings if you are unable to do so manually or require further assistance.

Step 3

Add Text Record ENS1 dnsname.ens.eth <eth-address>

Step 4

Check that your name was imported. If the domain is imported, then you are done.
